I Forgot to Lock My Car — And I Was Too Lazy to Go Back
You know that feeling. You're already inside, shoes off, kettle on — and then it hits you. Did I lock the car?
The Most Relatable Car Owner Problem
It happens to everyone. You park, grab your bags, walk to the door — and the moment you sit down your brain decides to ask the question it should have asked 30 seconds ago.
Did I actually press the lock button?
Now you have three options:
Option 1: Go back and check. Put your shoes back on, walk to the parking lot, press the button, walk back. Two minutes of your life gone, plus the mild embarrassment of doing the thing you already told yourself you did.
Option 2: Convince yourself it's fine. You always lock it. Probably. You're 80% sure. Maybe 70%. You spend the next hour at 70%.
Option 3: Lock it from your phone. If your BlueLink or Kia Connect subscription is active, open the app, tap Remote Lock, done. Except your trial expired six months ago and you never renewed.
None of these are great. Here's the actual solution.
Walk Away Auto Lock — The Feature That Makes This Problem Disappear
Walk Away Auto Lock is exactly what it sounds like.
You get out of your car, grab your bag, and start walking. After a few steps — the car locks itself. Automatically. Without you pressing anything.
No button. No app. No second-guessing.
When you approach the car again, it unlocks as you get close. Walk away — it locks. Walk toward it — it unlocks. The smart key system your Hyundai or Kia already has is designed to do this. It just isn't activated from the factory.
Why Hyundai and Kia Don't Turn This On By Default
Your car's smart key module already has proximity sensors built in — that's how it knows when you're close enough to unlock the door by touching the handle. The hardware for Walk Away Lock is already there.
Hyundai and Kia don't enable it by default because it requires a module that communicates with the smart key system at a deeper level than the factory configuration allows. MyKeyPremium connects directly to that system through the CAN bus — and activates the proximity-based locking that was always built in but never turned on.
What MyKeyPremium Actually Does
MyKeyPremium is a plug-and-play module that connects to your Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis smart key system in 20–30 minutes — no wire cutting, no dealer visit, no programming.
It activates four functions that your car's hardware already supports:
Walk Away Auto Lock / Auto Unlock Walk away → car locks. Walk back → car unlocks. The problem described in this entire article is permanently solved.
Remote Start via OEM Key Fob Press Lock → pause → Lock on your existing factory key fob. Engine starts, climate control runs. No extra remote on your keychain.
Smart Timer Lock the car with the engine running. It keeps running for up to 20 minutes — perfect for pre-warming on cold mornings — then shuts off automatically. If anyone tries to shift out of Park, the engine cuts immediately.
PIN Code Door Entry Access your car without your key fob using a PIN code on the door handle. Useful when your fob battery dies or you just don't want to carry keys.
"But I Have BlueLink — Can't I Just Lock It From the App?"
Yes — if your subscription is active. BlueLink and Kia Connect do allow remote lock/unlock through the app.
But there are two problems with relying on this:
First, it requires an active subscription. After the free trial ends, remote lock/unlock is locked behind the paid plan. If you didn't renew, the button in the app does nothing.
Second, it's reactive. You're locking the car after you already forgot. Walk Away Auto Lock is proactive — it locks the moment you leave, every single time, without you thinking about it at all.
The Difference Between Fixing a Problem and Eliminating It
BlueLink lets you fix the problem after it happens. Walk Away Auto Lock means the problem never happens in the first place.
That's the actual difference.
